Technology Was Focus of This Year’s SISO Executive Conference

SISO logoThis year’s Society of Independent Show Organizers’ Executive Conference, known as Digital Declaration this year, just wrapped up on August 11 and covered multiple aspects of technology that impact the trade show industry. In addition to that, this year’s Executive Conference also saw an increase in attendance.

180 show organizers and suppliers came to the show, which was held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, up from last year’s attendance of 15o attendees when the conference took place in Boston. The event started with a reception at the Franklin Institute with President and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau Jack Ferguson welcoming the crowd.

“We’re delighted to have SISO back,” he said. “We hosted you six years ago. Philadelphia has changed a lot since then. There’s a 62% larger convention center.” The next morning started off with the keynote speech “From Fractal Marketing to Fish TV” by Andrew Davis, CSO and co-founder of Tippingpoint Labs. Davis encouraged trade show companies to start thinking more about content 365 days a year, as opposed to “just go from planning one trade show to the next”.

According to SISO’s Executive Director Lew Shomer, “The content for this event is really interesting. It is everything people are talking about, but I don’t think everyone understands. We need to take more time so that people can understand applications on how this all works.”

Co-founder of the BlogWorld New Media Expo Rick Calvert urged attendees to stay away from virtual trade shows stating that they were a waste of time. However, Calvert did show his support for virtual conferences stating that they were “very sustainable”.

Other hot topics included smartphones, apps and other forms of mobile technology, as was the topic of how to use digital marketing to attract more attendees to the showfloor. President of Hanley Wood Exhibitions and SISO Executive Conference Education Chair Rick McConnell stated that technology was the focus for the event because he felt it was the most significant change impacting the trade show industry right now.

“The traditional ways to connect buyers and sellers are not enough,” he added. “If you are not tapping into the younger generation, you’ll see a decline in exhibitors and attendees. We also need to better understand the tools of social marketing.”

Next year’s SISO Executive Conference will be held from August 13 through August 15 in Chicago. Darrell Baker, Director of Washington, D.C. Regional Sales for the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau, told attendees, “We have a lot of nice things planned. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago.”

Direct2Drive Acquired by GameFly

GameFly and Direct2DriveGameFly, the highly popular game renting service that takes its queue from Netflix, has recently purchased Direct2Drive, the PC game download service first set up by the popular gaming website IGN. GameFly is a rental-by-mail service that allows customers to rent games for their consoles and have them delivered by mail, very similar to the way Netflix does with movies. Direct2Drive is a direct download service that is pretty much the same thing as Steam, allowing gamers to buy and download PC games directly to their hard drive without the need of physically going out and buying the game.

This new deal combines Direct2Drive’s extensive library of over 3,000 PC and Mac games with GameFly’s collection of over 7,000 new and used games for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox 360, Xbox, Wii, GameCube, Nintendo DS and GameBoy Advance. According to Evan Narcisse of IFC.com, “The acquisition makes GameFly more of an analogue to Netflix than any other entity in the gaming business. Netflix offers access to content on two ways, on disc and via streaming.”

As a part of the transaction, IGN will gain a minority equity stake in GameFly. However, the website will play no direct role in the operations or governance of GameFly. News Corporation is said to be taking one observer seat on GameFly’s board as well though other terms of the deal have not been disclosed to the public.

According to CEO of GameFly David Hodess, “We’re very excited to bring the D2D team on board at GameFly and expand our ability to deliver games to consumers. Only GameFly can offer a complete library of physical and digital games for the PC, Mac and consoles in one place.”

Jorge Espinel of News Corp. Digital Media Group added, “GameFly has been an innovator in the video games industry, and it continues to evolve with the expansion of its digital offering. We’re excited to continue working and partnering with GameFly moving forward.”

The addition of PC games to GameFly’s library is a major step forward for the company. While console gaming is red hot right now, there are a lot more PC gamers out there. In addition to that, PC gamers are largely considered to be the more “hard core” gamers, so aiming at this market should bring nothing but profit for GameFly.

WiFi Hotspots for Everybody

WiFi hotspotSometimes I look at my life and wonder, “How did we live without technology?” Technology just makes so many things so much easier that it is quite literally baffling to me sometimes. Just think about all the things your laptop can do. Its portability makes it the perfect device to manage your down time wherever you are. The next time you want to take a break from your busy day-to-day life, bring your laptop along. There are numerous places you can find free WiFi, you just need to know where to look.

Coffee shops are a main one. Loads of people like to take 30 minutes or so out of their day and have a coffee break. Starbucks and loads of other coffee houses offer free WiFi at most of their locations and some companies even train their employees to assist customers with basic problems when it comes to WiFi.

Everybody needs a lunch break and there are tons of restaurants that are perfect for lunch that also incorporate free WiFi. Panera Bread is one such place. This bakery/cafe is the perfect lunch spot, especially if you bring your laptop along. The free WiFi and freshly baked goods go together like PB&J.

How many of you have ever had to get your oil changed and been stuck in the waiting room of a boring auto shop? Yeah, me too. There is only so much enjoyment you can get from looking at pamphlets of tires, which is where a laptop comes in handy. Every EZ Lube location has free WiFi.

Ice cream is always acceptable, no matter what time of year it is. Nothing is quite as good as sitting down on a hot summer day and relaxing with some cool refreshing ice cream. If you can’t find anybody to go with you or you prefer some alone time, consider Ben & Jerry’s. All Ben & Jerry’s locations now offer free WiFi as well, making enjoying that triple scoop of double chocolate chip even better.

Other places, like fast food restaurants, book stores and even gas stations all offer free WiFi making the ability to connect to the internet anywhere even easier. So the next time you find yourself out and about and you want to take a few minutes to relax, consider some of the above locations and let your laptop tag along. You may just find your new favorite hobby.

Is Direct2Drive’s New Computer Game Rental Service Worth It?

Direct2DriveDirect2Drive, a digital download store that allows you to purchase and then download computer games directly to your hard drive, is testing out a new rental service which will allow you to play any computer game you like for five hours for $5.00. Now this may seem like the same thing as Netflix or GameFly but there is a difference. If after playing the game for five hours you decide that you like it enough to purchase it, then you can apply the $5.00 you spent renting the game to the final purchase price.

As of right now there are only three titles in the pilot program: Grid, Silent Hill: Homecoming and Divinity II: Ego Draconis. Game rentals are a very interesting way to go for a company that is a digital download service company, and there are undoubtedly a lot of questions that pop up with a turn of events like this. However, this isn’t really a new thing. If a person wants to try out a game before they buy it, they can typically download a demo for the game and try it out for a while. The only difference is that you do not typically need to pay for a demo.

The one thing that doesn’t seem too good about this is that five hours is hardly enough time to beat most games and playing a game for five hours isn’t enough time to find out if you like a game or not. Another question is why you would want to spend $5.00 on a rental when computer games are usually on sale or offered at discounted prices soon after release, especially on sites such as Steam? The three games listed on Direct2Drive’s pilot are also priced higher than competing companies which minimizes the appeal of the $5.00 taken off after the rental if you decide to purchase the game.

Games that this type of service would be perfect for would be games like MMORPGs. Games, like the newly released DC Universe Online, that require a monthly subscription to play would definitely benefit from a rental service like the one offered from Direct2Drive since uncertainty is always involved when buying a subscription-based game. New games that also do not have demos will also be good games for the service but for optimum sales, the rental price as well as the allotted time would need to be adjusted.
