Google Announces Android Wear

Pretty much everyone owns and understands how to use a smartphone. They keep us connected with the world, help us with our jobs, all kinds of things. Most people probably don’t fully realize how much they rely on them. But most people don’t realize that we are only at the starting point of mobile technology, and there is so much more that can and will happen with it. Wearable tech is starting to pop up, and it is making life more efficient than ever.

Android has officially announced ‘Android Wear’. It is a new project that the company has launched to move the Android system to different wearable devices. Their first product is going to be, of course, a watch. I don’t know about you, but I’m not very impressed with smartwatches anymore. They all seem the same, and to me  they were old news before they hit the market. But, this is just the starting point for Android Wear, and I’m excited to see where it will go.

There are some cool features to Android’s new watch though. It gives you real time updates from your favorite social media sites, chats, emails, all kinds of stuff. So it keeps you fairly updated throughout your busy day. You can also ask it questions, much like with Siri. If you are trying to figure out how many calories are in the food you’re thinking about ordering, the Android watch has your back. You can also text anyone, send an email, call a taxi or set an alarm just by speaking into the watch.

It also acts as a health and fitness tracker. You can set goals for the week, get reminders, and even get your fitness summaries whenever you want to see how far you have come. It also uses GPS to tell you how far you run or cycle.

The last and probably most useful feature that we know of so far is the ability to control other devices. Don’t want to get up to grab the remote to your TV? Just tell your watch to change the channel.

Developer Preview

For all of the developers out there, you will be pleased to know that there is already a section for you on developer.android.com/wear so that you can fix up all of your current apps to work on the watches. You’ll be able to set the notifications specifically for the watch, but in a lot of cases, it will probably work fine without doing anything because the Android notification system won’t really be much different.  There will be more developer resources and APIs added very soon.

Android also plans on teaming up with a lot of brands such as Fossil to make super fashionable smart watches that you can wear with anything and look professional. Thank goodness. There is no way to look good in most smartwatches on the market today.
