Which personal hotspot is best for you?
The overall goal of hosting a WiFi hotspot at your location is being able to offer high-speed wireless Internet to your visitors, customers, and staff. These devices are popular for businesses and events for both adding additional private networks and improving current internet speeds.
Today we discuss two of our most popular Verizon hotspot rentals: the Jetpack MiFi 6620L (4G) and the MiFi M2100 (5G UW).
MiFi 6620L
The new Verizon Jetpack MiFi 6620L packs nearly everything you need into a 4.74 oz device.
With support for up to 15 devices, excellent battery life, and an external antenna port, there isn’t much more you could want from a 4G LTE mobile hotspot.
This matte-black device has dimensions of 2.6” x 3.7” x 0.76” and has a 2-inch color LCD with three navigation keys below the screen. The home screen allows you to see your signal strength, data usage, battery, and connected devices. Although you can’t use the on-screen interface to switch WiFi passwords (you can via a web-based application), you can switch between 2.4 and 5GHz to alleviate emergencies caused by a crowded network.
Using the web-based management interface, you can select a VPN, manual DNS, firewall, port filtering, forwarding. You can also edit parental controls that let you block and whitelist specific websites by the device. You’ll also be able to enable “WiFi privacy separation” which prevents peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connections using your hotspot.
The 6620L has a removable battery that allows over 15 hours of constant video streaming, thanks in part to Verizon’s more power-efficient Qualcomm chipset – packing truly everything you could need into a compact hotspot, except for 5G.
MiFi M2100
Verizon’s MiFi M2100 5G UW by Inseego was the first real gigabit 5G hotspot widely available in the US. Not only can this millimeter-wave 5G device bring broadband-level speeds to single devices, but also to groups, classes, or teams of gadgets. With support for up to 30 devices and WiFi 6 to reduce interference, this hotspot is ready for team connectivity. Unfortunately, it’s still limited by Verizon’s limited millimeter-wave (5G) network.
If you’re looking for a hotspot to share with a large group of people, with tested distances of over 80 feet, the M2100 is a great selection. This team-oriented device outlines the reason people usually buy hotspots – for groups, businesses, or institutions that want to offer internet access to a large number of people. Not to mention Verizon offers plans with unlimited 5G usage, including hotspots.
The M2100 has a clear, monochrome touch screen on its front face. Via the touch controls, you can monitor data usage, change WiFi settings, and keep track of who is connected to your hotspot. Like the 6620L, there are also more connections through a web portal like port filtering and forwarding, guest networks, WiFi band usage and channels, up to 80MHz bandwidth, firewall, MAC filter, and manual DNS.
This device lasts around 9.5 hours while streaming 4G LTE on the hotspot. Although this currently falls short of other mobile hotspots, Inseego is promising an 8,500mAh accessory battery later this year – which should bring this device well past 24 hours of constant usage.
Although this hotspot is great for large rooms or offices, it isn’t meant to be a whole-home or entire-building router. As far as range goes, you can expect reliable connections up to 50 feet away, and can still maintain a connection at 75 feet– but performance may drop off.
It’s important to note that the M2100 won’t work on international 5G networks, on T-Mobile’s 5G network, or on upcoming C-band networks.
Looking to the future
Although their 5G hotspots are currently limited by the lack of a strong 5G infrastructure, Verizon is working with companies like Qualcomm and Samsung to build in-home routers, repeaters, and indoor micro-cells that can help its coverage problems and make hotspots like the M2100 much more useful.
